United States: Following the temporary closure of many major rail crossings due to the large number of migrants arriving at the shared border, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced on Thursday that he and American officials had agreed to keep border crossings open.
“This agreement has been reached; the rail crossings and the border bridges are already being opened to normalize the situation,” Lopez Obrador told a morning press conference. “Every day, there is more movement on the border bridges.”
Because border commerce is so important to both countries, Lopez Obrador said that the conversations with the US delegation on Wednesday, which included Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, were “direct.”
The negotiations take place as a sizable caravan of migrants makes its way gradually toward the border in the hopes of entering the United States. Around 1,500 individuals were in this caravan, according to Lopez Obrador’s most recent figure.
Fentanyl is a potent and deadly opioid; the issue was hardly discussed, the president added.
Mexico is being pressured by the United States to take action against fentanyl trafficking, while Mexico has been pushing for tighter US control to prevent firearms from the neighboring country from reaching powerful drug cartels.
